Rocker vs Camber, Explained
Two skis can have the same waist width and length and feel completely different. The reason is profile — the shape of the ski when you set it on a flat floor. Here's what each profile does, and how turn radius interacts with it.

The four profiles
Full camber
Arched underfoot, contact points near tip and tail
Strength: Maximum edge grip, energy out of the turn, precision on firm snow
Trade-off: Catchy at low speed, dives in deep snow
Rocker / tip-and-tail rocker
Tip and tail lift early off the snow
Strength: Float in powder, easy turn initiation, forgiving in crud
Trade-off: Less effective edge, washes out on ice
Flat
No arch, no lift
Strength: Stable, predictable, common in park skis
Trade-off: Less pop and rebound than camber
Hybrid (rocker–camber–rocker)
Camber underfoot with rocker at both ends
Strength: The modern default — grip where your foot is, float where it helps
Trade-off: Nothing, really; it's why almost every all-mountain ski uses it
Where turn radius fits in
Turn radius is the size of the arc a ski wants to make when you put it on edge. It's printed on most skis in meters.
- Under 16 m: quick, short-radius turns. Slalom and frontside carvers.
- 16–19 m: the all-mountain sweet spot — happy carving or slarving.
- 20 m+: big, stable, high-speed arcs. Freeride and GT-style skis.
Rocker shortens the effective edge, so a rockered ski skis a little shorter and turns a little easier than its stated radius suggests. That's why a 184 cm rockered freeride ski can feel more manageable than a 177 cm full-camber carver.
