Ski Turn Radius Explained

Turn radius is the ski's built-in circle shape when you tip it on edge, and it's listed in meters on the ski. It matters because it helps classify how a ski is likely to feel — but it's only one piece of the picture alongside length, width, shape, flex, construction, terrain, and how hard you ski.

What ski turn radius is

Turn radius is measured in meters, and it refers to the radius of the circle a ski would make if you put it on edge and let it run. In plain terms, it's the size of the turn shape built into the ski's sidecut.

The average sits somewhere between 15 and 20 meters, depending on a lot of factors. You never literally ski a full circle down the hill — the number exists to gauge dimensions and predict how a ski is likely to behave.

What changes a ski's turn radius

The most notable factor is length. As a ski gets longer, the turn radius generally gets longer too, because there's more edge in contact with the snow.

Width and shape matter as well. Width changes how much effort it takes to put a ski on edge and how far you can tip it. The shift from old straight skis to parabolic shapes — fatter tips and tails with a narrower waist — changed turn-radius behavior across the board.

Then there's construction and flex, which decide how the ski behaves once you're actually on it. Radius changes with edge angle, with how aggressively you set the ski on edge, and with how much the ski flexes into the snow.

How to choose the right turn radius

Three things drive the choice: your aggressiveness, the terrain you ski, and your ski style. Turn radius affects everybody — groomers, trees, moguls, racing, park.

  • Like skiing fast and holding a steady carve? Look at the longer end of the range.
  • Want tighter turns for skiing between objects, through moguls, or quick hard carves? Go shorter.
  • An all-mountain ski in the mid-90s underfoot typically lands right in that 15–20 meter average.

For reference, Trent skis around 5'11"–6' at roughly 180 lb. For long, aggressive turns he steers clear of anything under about 17 meters — 15 and 16 start feeling like race-ski territory — and he wouldn't go much past 20 or 21 unless he was mostly bombing straight down the hill.

How much the printed number really matters

Less than you'd think. Factories list the widest turn radius they can get out of the ski's sidecut math — it isn't a number somebody measured on the mountain. Because turn shape changes with edge angle, force, flex, and skier size, two people on the same ski can get different results.

A Salomon QST 98 at 17 meters versus an Atomic Bent Chetler 100 at 16.5 meters is a half a meter apart. That difference tells you almost nothing. The more useful question is whether the ski fits your style and category.

Why your size and strength change the feel

A heavier or stronger skier bends a ski more and drives it harder into the hill, which produces a tighter-feeling turn than a lighter skier gets from the exact same ski. Two people at the same height but 60 lb apart will not get the same turn shape.

Take the Nordica Enforcer 100 — a heavy ski with two sheets of metal. A 140 lb skier has to work far harder to get the same turn out of it than a 180, 200, or 210 lb skier does. Flip to something softer and lighter like the Line Vision 98 and it inverts: the lighter skier can vary the turn easily, while the heavier skier over-flexes it and has to back off to get good performance.

Long radius, powder, and speed control

Longer radii go hand in hand with aggressive skiing, powder terrain, and skis with more width and length. In powder, flotation comes from surface area, so those skis are wider and longer — and they carry longer listed radii as a result.

There's a tradeoff on firm or tight terrain. A shorter-radius ski makes a sharper turn with less effort, which is how you scrub speed and set up a stop. A long-radius ski is built for wide, fast turns and simply isn't as quick when you need speed control now.

Why the same listed radius can still ski differently

Plenty of brands use multi-radius or 3D sidecut designs, shaping the ski so it stays inside a clear style category while still responding to skier input. The Head Kore skis around 2019–2020 are a good example of a design that tried to preserve sidecut feel across lengths by narrowing the ski as the lengths went up.

The takeaway: two skis can share a listed radius without skiing alike. The number places the ski in a category. The feel still comes down to length, flex, construction, and the person on top of it.
