How to hot wax in five steps
- Clean the base with a base cleaner or a hot scrape, then let it dry.
- Drip wax down both edges and across the middle of the base.
- Iron it in with a slow, continuous pass. Never let the iron sit still and never let the wax smoke.
- Let it cool completely — at least 30 minutes at room temperature.
- Scrape tip to tail with a sharp plastic scraper, then brush until the base shines.
Common questions
Should I match wax to air temperature or snow temperature?
Snow temperature. Snow lags behind the air, especially in the morning and in shaded terrain. If you cannot measure it, use the overnight low plus a few degrees rather than the afternoon air temperature.
How often should I wax my skis or board?
Every three to five days of riding for most people, or any time the base looks chalky and white along the edges. Man-made snow and spring dirt strip wax faster, so wax more often on those days.
Can I use all-temperature wax for everything?
Yes for most recreational days. Universal wax works over a wide range and is the simplest choice. Temperature-specific wax is meaningfully faster only at the cold and warm ends of the range.
What iron temperature should I use?
Follow the wax label first. In general, cold-temperature waxes are harder and need a hotter iron, and warm waxes need a cooler iron. If the wax smokes, the iron is too hot and you are burning the base.
