Ski Bindings Explained

Bindings are easy to ignore until they're wrong. Here's how DIN, brake width, mounting, and binding type affect safety and performance, plus the video that walks through it.

What DIN measures

DIN is the release-force range a binding is set to. It's not a skill badge — it's a calculated number based on your physical stats and skiing style. A shop technician sets it with a torque test after mounting.

Weight

Heavier skiers need a higher DIN to hold the boot securely.

Boot sole length

Longer boot soles create more leverage, which usually lowers the needed DIN.

Ability

Aggressive, faster skiers use higher settings than casual cruisers.

Age

Older skiers or those with prior injuries often use a lower, more release-friendly setting.

Brake width matters

  • Brake width should be equal to or slightly wider than the ski waist.
  • Too narrow and the brake won't clear the edge; too wide and the arms drag in the snow.
  • Many bindings come in multiple brake widths — pick the one that matches your ski.

Common binding categories

Alpine / resort

The standard fixed-heel binding for resort skiing. Highest retention and elasticity, best for most downhill skiers.

Alpine touring (pin/Tech)

Lightweight bindings that pivot at the toe for uphill skinning and lock down for the descent. Not a resort binding — release values and elasticity differ.

GripWalk / MNC

Modern boot soles come in different shapes. Make sure your binding is certified for your boot sole type (ISO 5355, GripWalk, or Walk-to-Ride).
