Common questions

What is a DIN setting?

DIN is the release value on a ski binding. It controls how much force it takes for the boot to come out of the binding. Too low and you pre-release; too high and the binding may not release in a crash.

Can I set my own DIN?

You can calculate it, but a certified shop technician should set and test it. Release values must be verified on a calibrated test machine — that is the only way to know the binding actually releases at the number on the dial.

What is skier type?

Type 1 is cautious skiing on gentle terrain at moderate speed. Type 2 is average, mixed terrain and speed. Type 3 is aggressive skiing on steeper terrain at higher speed. Type 3+ is for very aggressive experts who accept a higher retention setting.

Why does boot sole length matter?

Sole length changes the leverage between your boot and the binding. A longer boot needs a lower DIN number to produce the same release torque, which is why the chart shifts by sole length.
